If you're:

A history lover. Go and see Cathar forts, walled citadels, mediaeval abbeys, Roman coliseums, bridges and aquaducts, the Oppidum d'Enserune and as many museums as your feet can stand.

A culture lover. Go and see open-air jazz concerts, the opera at Montpellier, Nimes and Orange, Montpellier's Musée Fabre and the the local summer fetes.

Sporty. Go and do canoeing at Roquebrun, water sports at Lake Salagou, golf, tennis, horse-riding, cycling, ballooning and rock-climbing or watch traditional water-jousting at Sete.

Thirsty. We live in the biggest vineyard in the world and these days there are some fabulous wines to taste. Look on our extra information page to discover some of our favourites.

A shopper. There are local markets each week - cheese, patés, flowers, baskets, pottery and bad clothes. For the more upmarket - the gorgeous boutiques of Montpellier, Nimes and even Barcelona (just 3 hours down the motorway.)

What's nearby Le Couvent B&B?

Le Couvent is in the village of Roujan. Turn left at our big grey gates and a 5 minute stroll takes you into the vineyards. Stroll right for 2 minutes and you'll find 2 bakers (Harrods standard), 2 butchers (better than Harrods) and 2 grocers. Roujan eats well. You'll also find a pharmacy, Le Grand Cafe and a bank with a parsimonious ATM but NOT a bureau de change. Remember you're in France, which doesn't do fast food but does do siesta between 12.30 and 3.00.

Buy a portion of steaming fresh paella from Pézenas Saturday market and cycle into the vineyards with a bottle of wine, a book and a picnic blanket.

Potter along the tree-lined Canal du Midi near Capestang or Béziers by foot, by bike or by day-trip canal boat.

Head off to the huge flea market at Marseillan where you'll find everything for sale from exquisite silver snuff-boxes to a pair of used socks. Have a coffee watching the world saunter by and follow it up with a finger-licking seafood lunch on the coast and a snooze on the beach.

Take the train and a picnic to Millau and see the most beautiful new bridge in the whole wide world, the Millau Viaduc. The town beneath is lovely too and famous for its leather goods and the beautiful views at the end of every street.

If there's a summer fete on (and there always is in some village or other in August) book a bad meal at one of the long tables, chat to 4 generations of our lovely French neighbours and hit the dance-floor when the band strikes up. Edith Piaf, Black Sabbath, Amy Winehouse, Eminem - the local cover-bands (complete with go-go dancers and 30 changes of costume) take a crack at them all. It's noisy and it's fun.
